Ruth Card Ashby was born to Joseph
Y. and Pearl Christiansen Card in 1917, and raised in Cardston,
Alberta, Canada. After attending the local schools, she went
to Salt Lake City, where she studied at the School of Nursing
of the L.D.S. Hospital in Salt Lake City and the University of
Utah, obtaining her R.N. (registered nurse) license. She then
attended Brigham Young University in Provo, and became school
nurse there. It was there she met and married
William Cropper Ashby, son of Robert L. and Hannah Ashby, of
American Fork, Utah. Will had just returned from a mission to
France and had come to B.Y.U. to finish a master's degree. They
have five children, and she currently (2008) lives in the family
home in Chattanooga, Tennessee, close to her son and his wife.
In her own words, "My eternal companion graduated from mortality
in the year 2000. Now that I am 91, and we have 24 grandchildren
and 40 great-grandchildren, my love for this wonderful posterity
has motivated me to collect stories of faith and courage from
the past and from the current generations, including a four-year-old,
for this compilation. May these stories be a blessing to you
and yours as you grow up in a troubled, unstable world." |
